Un petit we tranquilou.

Éclaircie et soleil samedi: allez hop on s’équipe et on s'habille comme on peut ;)

et direction la station de sport d'hiver de Cypress. Elle se trouve a environ 40min de chez nous.

Mon collègue nous a gentiment passé des raquettes et nous voila partis pour une balade de 2h30 avec une petite pause lunch dans un refuge. On a commencé avec le beau temps et on a fini dans le brouillard avec la neige

Superbe ambiance, super moment! A refaire absolument!!!

UBC

I thought I'd share with you a little about the my place of work. UBC is found to the far west of Vancouver (any further and you'd fall in the sea...) The campus is surrounded by woodland and parks (Pacific Spirit Regional Park and the University Endowment Lands) which makes the journey there quite picturesque - especially if one takes the route along NW Marine Drive which takes in the north shore mountains (to the north) and the mouth of the Burrard Inlet (...to the north...)

Campus itself is rather pretty, and the department where I work has just moved in to a new building. From the fifth floor, one can look out over to Vancouver Island (when the weather is good...)

My boss, Mark, is currently away on Sabbatical in Boulder, Colorado. Whilst he's away, his PhD student Kathi and I are squatting in his office.

However, the majority of my time is spent in the lab - a new facility in the newly completed earth science building. It's the most massive space in which I've ever worked - 6 m high and about 8 by 20 m. We've even got a crane to move things around, should the need arise. It's a great place in which to do experiments, especially water based ones as there are trench drains running along both sides of the room: if ever we spill something on the floor, we just get the hoses out and wash it away!

Goodbye Coal Harbour, hello West End!

Sév and I clearly love packing and moving house! As of the first of December, we have been installed in our new apartment in the West End. We've gone from ~55 m² to nearly 100 m² in terms of floor area, so a pretty massive change. Furthermore, we've gone from furnished to unfurnished...so a trip to IKEA was necessary. Unfortunately our car is a saloon so one can't lower the rear seats, but fortunately it's still quite spacious!

Living in Coal Harbour meant being next to the port, but living in the West End means living but a stone's throw from the beach. Despite the slightly wintry weather that we've been having recently, we've been out a couple of times to wander along the beach. As the waterfront faces towards the west, we can go down and watch the sunsets from there.

Good things are happening. My tests area all good and the 20 week ultrasound showed a perfect little baby - perhaps a little skinny, but an active, wriggly little thing and we can't wait for April... Furthermore, we're moving to our new apartment at the end of November so we're both just very happy!

Après une semaine stressante, il faut bien l'avouer, on vient partager avec vous deux bonnes... que dis-je... deux TRÈS bonnes nouvelles.

 1- Comme vous le savez, David est en rémission depuis mi-Aout et donc son 1er contrôle était mi-Novembre. Le système de sante ici est différent, on ne reçoit pas les résultats directement chez nous par ex.. Donc ce fut pas mal d attente, pour finalement apprendre hier soir que ses résultats sont parfaits. Les marqueurs sont très bas. On est trop heureux!!!!!

 2- Aujourd'hui, on avait l’écho du 2nd trimestre. En France c'est a 22SA, ici (comme in UK) c'est a 20SA. 1er mot de David quand l'échographe est rentrée dans la salle: "On ne veut pas savoir le sexe!!!" Donc on aura une belle surprise en Avril!! Donc BB a été mesure dans tous les sens, et tout est parfait. Il a juste un petit estomac compare au reste, mais toujours dans les normes. Donc je vais juste le gaver a partir de maintenant. Il était très actif, bouge beaucoup, donc on a de moins belles photos, mais c etait trop choupinet :)
Notre mini-nous fait 265 g et 20.5cm !!!!!

Maintenant il n'y a plus que à tout préparer pour son arrivée!!!!!

Décidément les we sont trop courts, on fait plein de choses et ca passe trop vite.

 * visites d'appartement et ON A TROUVE UN NOUVEL APPART, et surtout on a été accepté. On déménage le 1er Décembre. Ce qui est trop drôle c'est qu'il est sur la même rue que notre appart actuel mais de l'autre coté de Downtown. Il est grand, plus de 90m2, y'a donc une chambre pour BB :), il est très lumineux, des grandes fenêtres dans toutes les pièces, ce qui est rare ici. C'est dans un quartier plus résidentiel dans une rue avec plein d'arbres: en ce moment avec l'automne c'est magnifique avec les feuilles oranges. C'est à 500m des plages, c'est très bien placé. Bon par contre il n'est pas meublé mais on va se meubler petit à petit..

 * On a rencontré un super couple avec leur petit BB de 4 mois. On a passé avec eux une superbe après-midi.

* On est allé au marché de Granville et on a acheté plein de bonnes choses, dont du fromage, du bon pain et des poireaux (qu'on a bizarrement du mal à trouver ici), donc le soir on s'est fait un festin :)

So the big news is that we've found a new apartment for December onwards. We'll still be living in Downtown...and still on Broughton Street, just on the other side of the peninsula. We've done Coal Harbour, now for the West End!

Also this weekend, we met up with a lovely Belgian couple and their 4 month old baby. Actually, Jean-Thomas works in EOS, like me, but for some reason we've not formally met...dispite both giving short talks in the same introductory session at the beginning of term! We spent several hours in their company, and will meet them again sometime soon. The only shame is that they'll be heading back to Belgium in January so our time together will be short. After that, we treated ourselves to some non-plastic cheese from Granville Market - Mont Jacob from Quebec. Yummy!

Notre Halloween

Haloween is a big deal here, but of course forgetting completely about the origins of the festival - typically à l'americaine!
We tried making a Jack O'lantern but made the mistake of trying to soften the flesh by putting it in the oven. Result: no lantern, but lots of pumpkin soup!

C'est vraiment la folie Halloween ici. Aujourd'hui on pouvait se balader en ville, y'avaient des gens déguisés de partout, c'est drôle. Les maisons, magasins sont décorés avec des citrouilles.
On a essayé de faire notre citrouille dimanche dernier, mais en commençant ça nous a donné trop envie de la manger, on a décidé de la cuire et de se faire une bonne soupe ;) Anais et Bikett ont donc gagné sans souci le concours de la plus "belle" citrouille!

That evening, we went for a "Lost Souls of Gastown" walking tour. Gastown is pretty much the oldest part of Vancouver and has lots of "historic" features - round here 100 years counts as old. It also has a reputation as being slightly shady and I'm not entirely sure if the high proportion of slutty looking women was due to us seeing a lot of "boardy girls" or people dressed up for halloween! The tour itself was interesting as we got to see bits of town that we probably would never have come across otherwise, but it was hard to generate a spooky atmosphere when there was so much revelry going on around us and it was pelting it down with rain!

Sinon hier soir on s'est payé un tour dans la ville, dans les coins les plus historiques, avec un "acteur" qui nous a fait revivre les meurtres de cette époque au fur et à mesure de la visite.
Bon... on peut avoir plus peur en regardant un épisode de "Bones" ou "Esprit criminel" ;) mais la visite de la ville sous la pluie battante nous a permis de découvrir des chouettes recoin.  (et de nous décider vraiment à acheter des chaussures étanches!!)

Ensuite on s'était fait un pub sympa et j'ai gouté une poutine, cuisine traditionnelle du Quebec: frite, cheddar blanc et gravy ! hummmmm, j'adooore

On a du retard: notre mois d octobre!

It's been a while since we last posted on the blog, so this post is something of a summary for the month of October.

Ca fait un moment qu on n a pas mis a jour ce blog. Donc on va essayer de rattraper notre retard.

Je dois dire que ces 2 dernières semaines, j avais pris un peu Vancouver en grippe pour plusieurs raisons. Je pense que ça a fait beaucoup de changements d'un coup et en plus avec la grossesse ça fait beaucoup de choses a gérer. Je pense que chaque changement nécessite une période d adaptation, et malgré tous les points positifs que l on rencontre, ces dernières semaines j ai eu un peu plus de mal. Mais après du repos et plein de discussions, tout va beaucoup mieux :)

Alors We du 5-6 Octobre: Encore un petit we bien sympathique: balade en tandem avec découverte de coins sympas au bord de la mer, fish and chips sur la plage, bref plutôt agréable et les 1eres couleurs de l'automne!
Ensuite on est monte a Grouse Mountains pour voir le coucher de soleil: tres beau et tres romantique.

Les deux autres we suivant ont été plus coocooning, cuisine, repos et visite d appart (qui est pour l instant infructueuse). Le temps s y prêtait bien puisque ça y est après 1mois et demi de temps magnifique, la pluie, le ciel gris et le brouillard sont en rdv. Mais il ne fait pas très froid: Exemple de la vue du parking pour aller à mon labo.

...because suddenly, summer/autumn stopped and winter arrived!!

Hier, on a travaille a la maison tous les deux, ça nous permet de passer un peu plus de temps ensemble car le rythme ici avec les transports et moi qui suis bien nauséeuse et vomitteuse ;) le soir, on ne profite pas autant qu on voudrait. Donc pendant notre journée boulot, on a fait une pause et on s est balade en bas de chez nous, sur Canada Place, endroit ou on n était pas encore allé. Super moment. On a trop bien choisi notre journée en plus car il a fait beau :)

And whilst we did actually do some work, we also decided to go for a walk along the seafront to Canada Place, seeing as the weather was nice for once.

The best birthday in the world...ever!

J'ai passé un merveilleux anniversaire. Depuis l année dernière, mes anniversaires se fetent sur plusieurs jours: zem bien! Samedi: mon mari me réveille avec une journée pleine de surprise: visite d'une ancienne réserve des 1eres nations, où une indienne nous attendait pour nous raconter comment ils vivaient avant, ce que la foret peut apporter comme médecine et nourriture. C'était super sympa, il manquait d'animations dirais je mais un 1er contact avec les 1eres nations super sympa.

I'm a little worried that Séverine is going to get used to having her birthday celebrated over multiple days, but what wouldn't I do for my wonderful wife?! This year, there were one or two little surprises for her over the weekend. For those amongst you who didn't know, Sév loves everything to do with First Nations culture. So, on Saturday morning, we drove to the Whey-ah-Wichen ("facing the wind") park in North Vancouver where a guide from the Tsleil-Waututh tribe took us on a tour of the rainforest and talked to us about how her people use the plants that are found there for food, medicine and crafts. It was really interesting!

Ensuite un super resto tenu par des gens des 1ers nations et cuisine inspirée de cette époque: c etait super sympa!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On a essaye de se faire beaux pour l occasion.

That evening, we went to a restaurant with a difference: first-nations inspired cuisine. The food was delicious and the atmosphere perfect. A lovely romantic meal for two...

Dimanche: pic-nic dans Stanley Park avec mon collègue et sa famille avec un super soleil. C'était super! Lundi, aujourd'hui: des cadeaux, des emails et coup de tel de tout le monde et surtout: l'écho officielle des 3 mois!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Et oui, pour ceux qui ne sont pas au courant (desolee si on a oublie qq un), ON est ENCEINT :) On a vu notre BB, il est parfait, tout va bien, on est sur un petit nuage. Je suis bien rassurée et heureuse. Pour mes 33 ans, je suis enceinte de 11SA+5 :) et c est le meilleur anniversaire du monde. Le BB est made in Auvergne et sera Canadien, Français et Britannique. Il est prévu pour le 17 Avril 2013 :) I think the pictures below say it all. Due date for our triple-nationality baby is the 17th April! :)

Et ensuite pour feter ca, un cidre chaud au caramel (specialité d'ici) et un gros gateau pour mes 33ans...que j'ai tout vomi 5 min apres ;)

 

 

 

Grouse Mountain

Encore un super we!

Toujours des problèmes avec notre voiture, elle a été tractée pour la 3ème fois en 2 semaines et amené dans un garage... C'est le point noir de notre arrivée en fait! Mais bon, soit ce garage peut la réparer soit on va la revendre en pièces déta chées (on s'est bien fait avoir je pense!!)... More news soon!

Du coup, on a loué une voiture pour qques jours: Samedi on a été chez mon collègue pour une soirée très agréable. Et aujourd'hui dimanche on est allé à Grouse Mountain (juste à 20-30 min de voiture de chez nous), ça s'appelle aussi le Peak de Vanc ouver et c'était génial. On a pris un pass à l'année. Pour monter, y'a soit un téléphérique, soit un chemin assez dur.. donc pour cette fois on a pris le téléphérique;). Arrivés là-haut, il y a, entre autres, plein de balades à faire entourées de grands sapins, la vue à 360° est magnifique, on peut prendre des télésièges aussi (l'hiver c'est une station de ski), y'a un refuge de Grizzlis (trop beaux ces gros nounours), y'a un spectacle de "bûcherons" avec concours de scie, de montée à un tronc d'arbre etc... : typiquement Canadien et bien marrant. On s'est bien amusé, le soleil était au rdv en plus! Un très chouette dimanche encore!!

Despite it being another weekend when the car had to be towed away to a garage, we were determined to make the most of the great weather. Grouse Mountain is about 15 minutes drive north of where we live and is known as "Vancouver's Mountain". In winter it's a ski station but in the summer it's home to Grizzly bears, a lumberjack show, plenty of walking trails and some pretty spectacular views. In truth, I guess the views and bears are there all year around! There's also a very highly noted 5 star restaurant overlooking the city which we'll try out some day...when we win the lottery!

Anyway, we had a great afternoon and will be going back there soon - especially since we bought season passes and can go back any time we want. We also have a 50% reduction in the entry fee for our guests and further reductions on things like snowshoe hire and ski passes. We're just waiting for you to come along!

Notre chez nous

So we've been here for a month now but, with things picking up at work and so forth, it's been a while since we posted on the blog. We thought that we'd share a few photos of our apartment, the surrounding area and how to get in contact with us. You have no more excuses!!!

Hello, ça fait 1 mois qu'on est à Vancouver et ca fait longtemps qu'on veut faire ce post avec des photos de chez nous et aussi notre adresse:

These aren't great photos as they were taken through the windows of our apartment and you can see reflections of the interior, but they do show the view which is pretty amazing.
